Government Stupidity

Those are two words that go hand in hand....

I was thinking about this whole air conditioner thing, and something struck me.

The Environmental "Protection" Agency has ruled my A/C system is obsolete due to the refrigerant used. Okay, but ask yourself something. Does it make good "environmental" sense to rip out my entire A/C system when a new compressor would have it working again? How much dread CO2 will be generated in the manufacture, shipping, removal, and installation of a new system? Is it "green" to consume energy in the recycling of my old system when, aside from the fried compressor, it was perfectly serviceable? Or maybe it'll wind up just another piece of landfill. That's "green" alright. And one more question, what will become of the "offending" freon that's currently in my system?

This whole thing reeks to high heaven of lobbying scum and back room deals. I can't believe that replacing an entire A/C system will in any way offset any damage that might be caused by 20 pounds of freon. And I can surely bet that any payback via lower electricity consumption would take years to realize. Probably a decade, at which time that system would then be obsolete and need replacement due to back room deals at the EPA...

Think about it from this angle: our economy is a Ponzi scheme. It requires ever increasing financial input to stay afloat (do your "patriotic" duty and spend spend spend!). What better way to achieve that increase than by planned obsolescence? Hell, it's worked wonders for Microsoft, so why not use it as a tool to prop up the Ponzi scheme! We'll just change the rules around every so often, which forces folks to spend more money. Money that is ultimately funneled into government coffers and bankers' profits. Money that the "investor" in the Ponzi scheme will never see again.

"Oh Mayberry, take off the tin foil hat..." Well I don't think there's any "theory" in this conspiracy, it's pretty clear what's going on. Government, corporations, and banks have thrown in together to bleed us dry. Corporations and banks tell the government what rules and laws they want, and government implements them. Does anyone here have any misconceptions about the real purpose of Obammycare? Why, it's to suck even more blood from our wilting carcasses in order to feed the insurance industry and those shiny new government bureaucracies! It's plain to see if you just follow the money. Watch it leave your paycheck or bank account and land with the IRS (who will be enforcing Obammycare) or the insurance company, ne'er to return.

The government/corporate conspirators are sucking every last dime away from us, and thereby enslaving us. Well, I say "us", but I should be saying "you", because I'll have none of it. "You" being the people who still believe our government is anything more than a fat, bloated parasite with its' fangs buried into your flesh. "You" who believe it could ever be anything else.

It's about time for anthropologists to divide homo sapiens into the two separate and distinct species which we have become: homo facundia (productive), and homo parasītus (parasite). Hey, they classify species in the plant and animal world based on a whole lot less difference...

I think you have the conspiracy wrong. It isn't the government and corporations working hand in hand. It is government and NGO's working hand in hand. Corporations didn't outlaw your refrigerant or set the rules that require you to replace your unit. Many of the NGO's are eager to share and even take power. The EPA is becomng nothing more then the enforcement arm of radical environmentalists and the UN's war on CO2. Expect it to get a lot worse. Far worse then you imagine.

Good point. Though corporations seem to get their piece of the pie, and they do manipulate our "representatives" to suit their goals. Freon producers and A/C system manufacturers are certainly benefiting from EPA rules... I can imagine a lot....

See these things make me wish I could fabricate everything I ever needed or wanted, but alas that is an impossible task. I would need factories and workers, and then the .gov with their "rules" would shut me down. Then Mayberry would still be stuck without a compressor, so, it is all mute. Heck just finding a decent grill is a pain in the ass now-a-days.

Hey Mayberry have you though about finding someone to do the repair under the table, most service techs love side jobs, maybe just install a new compressor without replacing the whole system..

Remember cash for clunkers? More energy is used in the production of a car than it ever burns in its life time.

It would have made sense to keep older cars on the road and reduce the production of new cars. Can't have an ever expanding economy that way, however.

The powers that be will try any trick to keep economic activity expanding. It's the only way interest payments can be made on all the debt.

I'm surprised they've kept the juggling act going so long.

I get the vibe that a lot of those coming up with various regulations - congress and other bureaucrats - are clueless as to (a) what really needs to be done and, (b) what it really costs consumers. Someone makes a law, then someone writes code to implement. Common sense falls by the side.

Probably your old system will be sold as scrap, shipped to China where it'll be smelted/reused, and then shipped back the U.S. and sold.

Al Gore would be proud...

You will have to pay for that freon to be properly disposed of.

While I agree in principle about planned obsolesce and the corporations influencing legislation to make us buy their crap, I gotta agree about eliminating freon. It harms our precious ozone layer and no new air conditioners should use it. I don't see how Freon producers (i.e. Dupont) are benefiting from the ban -- they can't sell it anymore.

Anyway, if you really want to be a rebel and starve the corporate beast, don't replace your A/C unit!

The Freon danger is a load of crap! One space shuttle launch releases more CFC's into the atmosphere than 100,000 fridges dumping their loads. Cows release methane on a daily basis, and coniferous trees(pine) constantly emit CO2. So let's chop down all the Xmas trees and kill all the cows.
Sorry, you haven't seen me in awhile. Was on a 4 week campout. Turned into a disappointment; all the shitheads (weekenders, off-road bikers, cache raiders, etc) have found our secret hideaway. Then got back to base to learn that my computer took a crap. Now using the wife's, when I can. So, I haven't dropped out of your fan list, you'll see me now and then.

So run across the border to Mexico and buy the parts there ... and the freon to run them.

Oh that's right, we are supposed to submit (wait isn't that Isalm???)

Scott, got a friend checking into it.

Sixbears, who could forget it... They do seem to excel at pulling rabbits out of their hats...

Suburban, I don't think they're clueless. They're greedy, and don't give a damn about you and me. Yeah, Al Bore would be proud...

Justin, exactly.

Sam, disposed of where? It's a gas, not something that goes away easily. Heh, I bet they burn it. Surely that doesn't cause any problems... Trust me, I will not replace the unit.

Wannabe, I don't doubt that. But that's the government doing it, so it's ok. Bummer they found your hidey-hole, but seems like they always do. Hope you get your 'puter problem worked out!

Anon 3:38, bringing it back across is the problem. Yeah, "submit", that's what they want...

It's really hard to say how much if any damage human use of freon does to the ozone layer. Most of the so-called damage is a natural cycling of more or less ozne and much of this is a direct result of volcanoes not humans. There is no "ozone hole" there is a yearly ozone thinning. When science first began tracking it it was in a decline as a result of solar radiation fluctuations not freon. Scientists or pseudo-environmentalists assumed it was human caused (gee, where have I seen that before?). Since then the ozone layer around the poles has fluctuated both seasonally and with the incidence of vocanic activity and also with response to solar radiation. But it has never been zero around the poles. If you search hard enough you will discover that a "hole" to scientists is a slight decrease in average not zero ozone. The data is there but somewhat obscured (intentionally obscured). The bottom line is freon may indeed have a negative effect on ozone but it is a minute fraction of the effect of natural causes.
