That's supposedly the peak wind gust from TS Hermine recorded at the airport as reported by the mullet wrapper. Bull shit! 39 MPH winds don't even raise my eyebrow...
At one point last night, my truck looked like it was in a wind tunnel test. Rain was flying off the roof in a stream that cleared the tailgate. Later, as I "slept" in the escape pod, sustained gusts roared through the trees and rocked that camper good. I would say those gusts hit at least 60 MPH. Sheesh, it's gusting to 35 right now and the storm has pretty much passed.
The escape pod held up good, except for the cheesy little awning that blew off. I left it on because for some dumb reason I actually listened to local weather dink "Dead Wrong Dale" who said we'd only see 40 MPH wind gusts. Silly me. Anyways, the tarp held up great, and I stayed dry.

Glad you are still with us. Too bad your awning is on its way to New Mexico.
We call the weather guy "the Prince of Lies.)
Never trust the weather guy in a tourist area.
Next to being a CONgressman, a weatherman is the only person I know who makes 6-figures and is consistently wrong and nobody calls them out on it. In their defense, however, most are not meteorologists, but rather pretty talking heads who read from the government weather services bulletins. Which raises another alarming point- can't the government even tell the weather accurately? With all the money and technology they've appropriated and stolen from the public sector, this is the best they can do? I doubt the government could predict "increasing darkness towards evening" correctly.
Down here in the Valley, unless you are hard up against the coastline, you barely felt it. I slept through it completely, I doubt if we even got an honest 1/2" of rain out of it, just a bit of wind.
Weird weather, this was our 3rd hit this year. We rarely even get one.
Weathermen really haven't changed that much, despite all of the 'fancy radar' and forecast instruments. When I was a kid, the old man in horn rim glasses, pencil protector in shirt pocket and pasted on sunny faces and frowning clouds on maps pretty much had the same amount of accuracy as now, if not even more.
Glad to hear you weathered the storm okay.
So far, the Houston area is dodging the bullet again as far as storms. Only getting the rain but none of the wind!
Sort of like waiting for the other shoe to drop, ya know?
One thing about living on the Texas coast, it's not a matter of "if" but of "when" !
Hang in there, buddy!
Hell we got 39mph in Brazoria County. I too have been in these "tropical storms" with over 90mph sustained winds.
i never take the last word of the weatherman over gut instinct. glad you are safe and sound and that the "pod" held up.
Got 4in in a 8 hour period in Brazoria Co.
Glad you and the pod survived the worst of it, Mayb. Did the female members of your clan stay in the pod too? I kind of hope they did, hoping it might trigger a light bulb as to the pros of prepping. Just hoping.
We have had 1-1/2 inches of (much needed!) rain so far and the skies look very promising that they will dump some more. I hope so. We need all we can get.
Hope this finds you all in one piece. We sure could use some of that rain your getting.Very dry here in Southern Illinois. So have you moved to the pod or just visiting?? FK
Hi Mayberry,
Storms are fun if you and your shelter don't blow away. I like extreme weather; makes me feel alive.
Just one question. Did the Gizzer sleep with you?
Dave
Sixbears, wern't nuthin'. And the awning was 5 feet away. Best weather guy we ever has was a fisherman by the name of Tom Nix...
Anon 10:40, ain't that the truth...
Anon 12:15, you got lucky, I heard Raymondville got hit pretty hard. Again... Yeah, we had one who went by "Breezy Phil", and part of his presentation was to focus the camera on the thermometer, barometer, and wind speed indicator on the freakin' wall in the studio. High tech baby....
Jim, y'all always get the rain, and we get the wind. I call bullshit! : )
Cabbie, yeah there was some hurricane in that tropical storm...
Anon 2:28, I'd say my gut failed me, but I made it through ok so maybe not...
Cigar, you got more than me, but then again y'all always do...
HossBoss, Thanks. Nope. We got a measly 2 inches...
FK, still standing. We could use it too, only got 2 inches out of the deal... Haven't moved. Yet...
Dave, I like it too! In fact, I love it. Giz hid in her "cave" under the computer desk and wouldn't budge. She wouldn't have liked it in the camper at all. Chicken dog...
